Plugs is The Angel’s recs column. On most Saturdays, you’ll get six picks—a restaurant, a bar, a shop, an ingredient, a person, and a treat—from someone in New York or Los Angeles who knows what they’re talking about, plus a selection of Angel-curated links. Plugs are for paid subscribers of The Angel only; upgrade your subscription to receive all six!
#100 is Adam Weisblatt, the co-founder of Last Word Hospitality, which operates some of my favorite L.A. and Joshua Tree-area restaurants, including Found Oyster, Barra Santos, Queen’s Raw Bar + Grill, Hermon’s, Rasarumah, the Red Dog Pioneertown, and The Copper Room. He’s a lifelong restaurant rat, the kind of guy who’s worked his way up every FOH position there is, and still has a deep respect for the game. That’s very apparent in his newly-released first book, “For the Love of Restaurants: An Insider’s Guide from Daydreams to Opening Night,” which chronicles the birth and meteoric rise of the group’s first restaurant, East Hollywood’s very own Found Oyster. Here are Adam’s Plugs:
Restaurant: Philippe the Original
I love old stuff and Philippe's is old. Wood chips on the ground. Cheap, chilled red wine. Lamb Dip with blue cheese and see ya later. The perfect precursor to a nap.
