Plugs — Amanda Perdomo
New York food, drink, and leisure recs from a brilliant pastry chef + LINKS
Plugs is The Angel’s recs column. On most Saturdays, you’ll get six picks—a restaurant, a bar, a shop, an ingredient, a person, and a treat—from someone in New York who knows what they’re talking about, plus a selection of Angel-curated links. Plugs are for paid subscribers of The Angel only; upgrade your subscription to receive all six!
#99/#4 is Amanda Perdomo, the gifted pastry chef behind Amanda’s Good Morning Cafe, which operates out of Strange Delight Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Featuring a dessert queen on Valentine’s Day felt like fate—yesterday, leading into this romance-filled weekend, Amanda made powder-sugared passionfruit donut hearts, and tragically, I couldn’t make it to Fort Greene for one. The silver lining? This week brought news that Amanda will continue slinging beignets, muffalettas, and other sweets and savories inspired by her New Orleans upbringing from her daytime post at the New Orleans-themed restaurant through April. Before AGMC, she honed her craft as a pastry chef at Wildair and Cool World, and has consulted on the dessert menus at Jr & Son and Kellogg’s Diner. Ask any pastry chef or pastry obsessive in town, and they’ll tell you: Amanda’s one of our most talented. Here she is with her Plugs.
Restaurant — Uluh
One of my favorite restaurants in the East Village is a Szechuan spot called Uluh. I can honestly say every meal I have there is better than the last. The menu changes daily, they have a fun selection of teas, and the best mapo tofu in the city.
