So happy to see Brittany's name in print. More publications should personally shout her out for running the kitchen at Horses! She's been killing it since day 1.
Love this!!! So many gems! A coffee concept that I feel like is crushing it on the pastry front is Asano. They’re working with fun indie bakers and everything is so impressive!
confirming nako is turkish! they do their pourovers well, and I love that they have pastries from Paloma (some but not all, so beware).
some other new faves: Manjul in soho and the Driftaway Tasting Room in bushwick is not to be missed for coffeeheads. Arcane is very good, and also Kabin. they serve la cabra as well.
The neighborhood-first coffee angle is refreshing. Theres been this weird trend where every shop felt optimized for instagram rather than actual community, but framing it around serving the block instead of chasing viral moments makes way more sense longterm. Also totally agree on the pastry collab opportunity, working with emerging bakers instead of defaulting to wholesale seems like an obvius differentiator that somehow hasnt been fully exploited yet.
I agree that reservation apps might soon feel irrelevant to a tech-savvy diner but agentic AI tools will still need to tap those services and networks. Gen AI is yet another front for competition among the biggest reservations players, now including DoorDash.
Totally, but I think how reservation apps are currently going about courting big-name restaurants will make even less sense as AI gains steam here (as diners are engaging less directly with the apps)
Depends how badly the apps' deep-pocketed credit card backers want to please their cardholders. OpenTable might become less of a consumer brand, but Visa will always want to offer perks to its biggest spenders.
Welcome back! Love the format.

Here for all the Horses love, forever!!
hope you’re right about NJ!!

Noted! Never heard of them — UES?
Yes and they have another location in WV, I believe! they’re a concept taking over restaurants that are closed by day!
I have been waiting for the NJ hype to take.
yayyyyyyyyy
❤️ cardamom - the best thing I made in December was David Lebovitz’s pistachio cardamom cake
☕️🤝🥐 fulllllly agree about the lane. I also like this idea of blending second/third waves. That’s interesting.
Nako is elite - wonderful selection of lesser known roasters and pour overs
Drip Coffee inside the Clark Street station has the best selection in the whole city! incredible pour overs and espresso and amazing people watching
Nako is why I wake up most mornings

For sure, will be interesting to see how it plays out, but something’s gonna give I think!
Dayglow in Bushwick (another LA based) is easily the best in NYC
